Food Scrap Recycling Drop Spot Open in Dryden

(Ithaca, NY) The Tompkins County Solid Waste Division – in partnership with the Town and Village of Dryden – has opened a food scrap recycling drop spot at the Dryden Town Highway Department.

The drop spot is open every Saturday from 9:00am to Noon. The free service allows residents to expand their recycling options and reduce their trash disposal costs.

The material collected each week is taken to Cayuga Compost in Trumansburg for processing, with the resulting compost marketed to landscapers, homeowners, and organizations as a soil amendment.

The Solid Waste Division offers toolkits to encourage residents to participate in food scraps recycling. The program is seen as playing a significant role in meeting the County’s goal of 75% waste diversion by 2016.

Food Scrap Recycling Drop Spots are also located at the Recycling and Solid Waste Center in Ithaca, at Cayuga Compost on Agard Road, at the Lansing Village Office (Saturdays only) and at Cornell Cooperative Extension on Willow Avenue in Ithaca (Sundays only).

Staff is on hand each week at the drop spot to answer questions and provide written material about the benefits of food scrap recycling. Residents also receive a supply of replacement compostable bags, as well as caddies and transportation containers for users new to the program.

The Dryden Town Highway Department is located at 61 E. Main Street (Route 392). Follow the signs to the drop spot location.
