The Department of Public Works is responsible for maintaining town water districts, sewer districts, Dryden Lake Park, Jim Schug Trail & Freeville – Dryden Trail, town buildings & grounds maintenance, old cemeteries, Virgil Creek Stabilization Project, and the Dr. Donald H. Crispell Flood Control Project.
In 2012 the following work was completed : Relocated Highway Garage exhaust vents, Converted Radio System to narrow band, Replaced town radio system antennae & cable, Renewed 10 year radio license, Built Overhang over Highway / DPW office entrance, Reshingled Highway / DPW office roof, Installed split rail fence, wooden barrier posts, and rock at Dryden Lake Park for security & lawn damage, Replaced deck bridge off from Chaffee Rd & also deck bridge further north, Installed new posts & chain gate off Dryden - Freeville Trail off Springhouse Rd., Dryden – Freeville Trail stabilized bank (old railroad bed) from Tropical Storm Lee damage, Rebuilt pump mounts & replaced hardware at Mott Rd sewer pump station, Installed security fence around NYSEG (town’s) water tanks, Built parking lot at Campbell Meadow Park off Lower Creek Rd. Purchased a new 45KW trailer mounted generator to replace 1970 ONAN. Replaced 1997 John Deere 955 Tractor Mower with 2012 John Deere 2720 Tractor Mower, Serviced generator to Beam Hill Radio Tower. Regular maintenance & cleaning was performed at the Town Hall. Water main break repairs. Town buildings and grounds maintenance, Etna Park mowing, Dryden Lake Park and Trail maintenance, other cemetery maintenance, Donald H. Crispell Flood Control Project maintenance were continued. The DPW assisted the Highway Department with various road projects & assisted Highway Department with snow removal on Town Roads. The DPW also assists the Village of Freeville.
2013 work project goals are :
Building & Grounds: Install plaque on rock identifying Old Dryden Fair site in front of Highway. Remove small section of curbing & install drainage tile on north end and install tile on south end of Town Hall parking lot to prevent ice build up.
Dryden Lake Park: Repair fishing pier foundation. Patch & repair driveway and parking area then surface treat. Replace pressure treated rails & spindles with composite board for playground station.
Jim Schug Trail: (From Rt.13 to Willow Crossing)
Replace bridge decking and deteriorated timber off (2) bridges located off Weber Street & Lake Road on trail. Replace nature educational signs.
Dryden-Freeville trail: (from Rt. 13 to a point unfinished before George Rd)
- finish culvert replacement
Water & Sewer Districts: (Consists of 6 water & 7 sewer districts)
Install a small 6′ X 8′ prefab building at Varna Pump Station for housing Chlorine System. Replace Varna sewer pump. Replace electric panel components at Mott Rd sewer pump station. Water & Sewer District repairs & maintenance. DSNY- mark utility as tickets get called in.
Dr. Donald H. Crispell Flood Control Project (Virgil Creek Dam):
Inspections are done freqently during and after heavy rain events as well as other times throughout the year. Normal maintenance include (spring debris cleanup, cleanup as needed after heavy rain events, & annual mowing)
- complete engineering assessment, update emergency action plan, and O & M. Work being done by T.G. Miller.
Virgil Creek Stabilization: (Section starts above Lake Street Bridge and continues to Gas Pipe Line Crossing).Repairs are made to rock vanes in the Virgil Creek Stabilization & Relocation Project as needed.
Old Cemeteries (Unfunded):
Named – Van Nortwick Place Cemetery off Caswell Road,Robertson Cemetery off Baker Hill Road, Ringwood (Knapp) Cemetery off Ringwood Road, Scofield (Gee Hill) Cemetery off Simms Hill Road, California (Dusenbury) Cemetery off Hunt Hill Road.
Routine maintenance is performed each year as time permits consisting of mowing, weed eating, cutting brush, cleaning up debris, repairing split rail fence, inspecting for damage and vandalism.
