Memorial Day Events

The Dryden Veterans Memorial Day Committee has once again organized a Memorial Day Parade and service. The parade will be held in the Village of Dryden, NY on Monday morning, May 27, 2013. The non-competitive parade will form on Highland Drive at 9:30AM, and move out sharply at 10:30AM. The parade will move east on Main Street to the Village Green for the annual service.

Please note the date we will observe Memorial Day with a parade is Monday May 27, 2013. Memorial Day (traditionally May 30) started as an observance of decorating graves throughout villages and towns of those killed in the Civil War in 1866. Let us all remember and honor the brave Americans that have sacrificed all to preserve our freedoms, liberties, and way of life.

There will be an open house with luncheon for all participants and the community at the Dryden Veterans Memorial Home on Route 13 about 12 noon following the service. Every one is cordially invited to attend.

In case of rain, listen to local radio stations for cancellation of the parade. The service will be moved to the Dryden Veterans Memorial Home at 11:00am.

NYSDEC: Twin Sheds Unit Management Plan

This Unit Management Plan (UMP) has been developed to strategically guide the management activities on the State Forests in the Twin Sheds Unit for the next 20 years, with a review scheduled after 10 years. The 5,002 acre Unit is comprised of the Hammond Hill and Yellow Barn State Forests. Covering about 8 square miles, the Forests are located in the Tompkins County towns of Caroline and Dryden.

Ithaca.com: Plan Envisions Changes for Varna

In 2005 The Dryden Planning Board composed a comprehensive development plan for the Town of Dryden. Subsequently, in the Dryden community recognized the need for a plan that is unique to developing the hamlet of Varna. According to Jane Nicholson, AICP Planner, of the Dryden Planning Department, “the Comprehensive Plan is essentially a framework that helps guide the community over period of ten to twenty years. Once a Comprehensive Plan is complete, it is up to the community to implement it. In the case of Varna, it was recognized by the town that with increasing development pressures in the Varna vicinity and availability of water/sewer, that Varna required its own plan. Additionally, there would be a zoning amendment that would help the community grow and develop while maintaining its character.”

Dog Enumeration

Starting April 1, 2012, the Town of Dryden will be conducting an enumeration. The dog enumerator will visit ALL residences in the town to identify the number of dogs at each. Owners will be required to license their dog(s) within 20 days of being notified and will be charged a $7 enumeration fee in addition to the regular licensing fee.

Licensing your dog is the law in New York State and is an excellent way to help the dog control officer return your lost dog to you. Because proof of rabies vaccination is required prior to obtaining a license, it also helps keep our community and pets safer.

Dogs four months of age and older are required to have a license. In the Town of Dryden, the yearly license fee for a spayed or neutered dog is $11.00, and $23.00 for a dog that is not spayed or neutered.

Volunteer Opportunities

The Town of Dryden volunteer boards consist of resident volunteers which provide assistance to town officials and staff on many aspects of local planning and decision making. Appointments vary depending on the board or commission. Applicants must be over the age of 16, residing in the Town of Dryden, Village of Dryden, or Village of Freeville. All meetings are open to the public. More information about the town's volunteer boards is available on the town website.

Are you new to the Town of Dryden? Not sure when your recycling goes out, who picks up your garbage, or what fire district you're in? Much of this information, you can get from the Tompkins County Solid Waste website . There is a recycling schedule and a list of vendors who provide garbage pickup services. Of course, if you live IN one of the villages (Freeville or Dryden), you should contact your Village office to answer some of these questions. Another great place for information is 211 - Tompkins County's Information & Referral Center. Many of the local fire departments also have their own websites and you can find answers to some of your questions there. **Need help finding your way around town head over to the Maps of Dryden page** If there are other questions you would like answered, please call the Town Clerk's Office at (607) 844-8888 x3 or email us and we will be glad to add information to this post.
